Radioactive Material Orders
All orders for radioactive materials at UAB must be processed through the Radiation Safety Division. Purchase order numbers must be acquired and the Radiation Safety Division must place orders.

Any order entered for radioactive materials must include all of the following:

  1. Catalog number from the vendor
    (Example: NEG013H/ PB10203/ 39001X)
  2. Amount to be purchased in mCi or uCi
(Example: 250 uCi or 1 mCi)
  3. Description including isotope and chemical form (Example: P-32 ctp/S-35 methionine)

Please contact Sherri Price at extension 4-4751 with any questions or inquiries.

Radioactive Waste Packaging
Due to strict DOT regulations in the transport of materials and an increase in the amount of liquid waste that is not being properly packaged for such transport, we have listed below guidelines to help alleviate any potential problems. Please review and adhere to the following:

- All liquid waste should be in a glass or plastic container with the proper cap in place.
- The containers should be placed within two (2) plastic bags - no exceptions.
- The containers should be placed within a cardboard box for transport.
- The containers should be padded inside the cardboard box to prevent movement and breakage. The padding can be anything from Styrofoam, extra garbage bags, shredded paper, etc.
- Seal the box. Do not use bench tape or the radioactive labeled tape alone; they are not strong enough to hold the box closed.
- Clearly label the box with the isotope and physical form (liquid, solid, animal tissue or liquid scintillation vials). Please make this visible on the top of the box.
- Physical forms must be segregated and packed in separate boxes.

In addition, there is a $50.00 fee for the disposal of liquid scintillation vials containing freestanding liquid. There is no charge for empty vials.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and if you have any questions, please contact us at 934-3797.
