Steam Pipe Explosion
June 18, 2003 - OH&S

In the very early morning hours of Wednesday, June 18, 2003 the silence was shattered by the sound of a large, high pressure steam line exploding. It happened at the corner of University Boulevard and 19th Street South right on the edge of the street at the curb. The force of the explosion blew a hole approximately 4 feet across and deep enough for the parking meter right above it to disappear down the hole. Parked next to the meter was a Lexus that sustained substantial damage from rocks, dirt and other debris that was blown high in the air and all over both streets. Steam could be seen shooting hundreds of feet into the air and the sound from the high pressure pipe could be heard as far away as the Hill University Center. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, but Alabama Power is investigating. There was little apparent damage to University property and no one was injured in the incident.
