Universal Waste Recycling (UWR)

Universal waste typically consists of batteries, pesticides, thermostats (thermometers), and mercury containing lamps (fluorescent bulbs). Recycling is an important strategy in minimizing waste. Our largest volume of this type of waste comes from fluorescent bulbs and back-up system batteries. Hazardous Materials Staff have arranged several pickup points with UAB maintenance staff.

All containers of UW must meet the following criteria:

    1. A label showing:

    • Material type (bulbs, batteries, etc.)
    • Date accumulation began
    • Address or location of collection.

    2. Containers must be sealed, in good condition, and suitable for transportation.

    3. Containers must be kept closed, except when adding or removing materials.

    4. All storage areas must have evidence of spills, releases, or leaks cleaned and removed in a timely manner (within 24 hours of detection). Contact the UAB HMF at 205.934.3797 for assistance if needed.

The materials are sent to a licensed permitted recycling company. If you have further question regarding UWR at UAB please call 205.934.3797.

SPECIAL NOTE
We receive several calls from lab personnel wanting to know how to dispose of UV or Germicidal bulbs. Simply decontaminate the bulb with a suitable decon solution (70% ethanol or 10% chlorox) and turn over to UAB maintenance to add to the collection of used fluorescent bulbs in their area.
