Silver Recycling Program (SRP) Many laboratories at UAB use automated x-ray film developer / fixer units. This process can and does produce hazardous waste in the form of spent fixer. The hazard comes from the silver in the spent fixer solution. According to state and federal regulations, any solution containing greater than 5 parts per million (ppm) must be collected and handled as hazardous waste. The used developer, though it may smell bad, is not considered (by regulations) a hazardous material / waste. We provide the containers to collect the spent fixer solution. We also provide the service of collecting full containers, treat the spent fixer solution, and return empty containers to the laboratory. This service is free at UAB and must be done to stay in compliance with the state and federal regulations. If your volume is large enough, we can set you up on a regular pickup schedule or if your volumes are small we can set the service up on a call in basis. SPECIAL NOTE If you have any questions call 205.934.3797. |
