| Radiation Safety Training Memorandum concerning radioactive materials handling and use training. The course is divided into two sections: an online portion that can be taken anytime, and an in-class portion that is offered quarterly. Both the online and the in-class portions of the course must be completed before the written examination for the course can be taken. The course is intended for laboratory technicians who have never attended a formal training course, or those utilizing radioisotopes for the first time. The topics covered in the online portion of the course include those mandated by the Alabama State Regulatory Agency to meet minimum training requirements for users. In order to complete the online portion of the course, a student must register for the in-class portion of the course, and all of the topics must be viewed in their entirety, from beginning to end. The self-tests included with the online portion are recommended, but not required.
The in-class portion of the Radiation Safety Training Course is offered quarterly over two days, from 1-5 p.m. each day. The first day of the in-class portion of the Radiation Safety Training Course covers procedural requirements specific to UAB (i.e., bioassays, documentation, waste disposal). A training manual will be distributed in class on the first day. A written examination is given on the second day of the in-class portion of the Radiation Safety Training Course. A pocket scientific calculator will be needed for problem solving. To register for the in-class portion of the Radiation Safety Training Course, call 4-2487. A certificate of training will
be awarded to those individuals who complete both the online and in-class
portions of the Radiation Safety Training Course, and who successfully
complete the written examination with a grade of 70, or above. Successful
completion of this basic course will not meet the necessary training
requirements to obtain radioactive material licensure at UAB. To obtain
additional information, call the Radiation Safety Division at extension
4-4751. NOTE: For those individuals who have had some experience in basic radiation safety principles, a challenge exam may be given in the RSD office. The RSD address is Suite 445 Community Health Services Building. Call the Radiation Safety Division at extension 4-4751 for more details. |
