Radiation Safety Refresher Course Training
This online course is required once every 5 years for those who work with radioisotopes. For more information, click here, or call OH&S at 934-2487.

In-class attendance of the course and baseline bioassay submission must be completed before the written examination can be taken. The course is intended for laboratory personnel who have never attended a formal course in radiation safety practices and/or those individuals utilizing radioisotopes for the first time.

The RSTC is offered quarterly. Students must attend the in-class lecture session and the examination. The corresponding training manual can be viewed on-line at http://www.healthsafe.uab.edu/pages/radiationsafety/rad_training_manual.htm.

The in-class lectures of the RSTC covers procedural requirements specific to UAB (i.e., bioassays, documentation and waste disposal, etc.). The written examination is usually given two weeks after the in-class session. A pocket scientific calculator will be needed for basic problem solving.

Registration
Regisration for the RSTC is required no later than Monday, August 31, 2009.
To register for the RSTC, call the Radiation Safety Office at
4-4751 or 4-2487.

A certificate of training will be awarded to those individuals who:

  • complete the in-class portions of the RSTC AND
  • pass the written examination AND
  • fulfill their baseline bioassay requirements

Successful completion of this basic course will not meet the necessary training requirements to obtain UAB Radioactive Material Licensure at UAB. To obtain information for a UAB Radioactive Materials License, call the Radiation Safety Program at extension 4-4751 or 4-2487.

NOTE: For those individuals who have had some experience in basic radiation safety principles, a challenge exam may be given in the RSP office. The RSP address is Suite 445 Community Health Services Building. Call the Radiation Safety Program at extension 4-4751 for more details.
