Initial Radiation Safety Training
There are two parts for the Initial Radiation Safety Training course:
Online Initial Radiation Safety Training
The first is an online course, and is required if you work with radioisotopes. This must be successfully completed before you can register for the second part (see below).
The Applied Radiation Safety Practicum
The second part on consists of two components:
- Submittal of your pre-operational baseline bioassay
- Successful completion of the live hands-on workshop
This live hands-on workshop consists of several stations that feature practical in-lab tasks of which the student must demonstrate proficiency.
Successful completion of this initial course will not meet the necessary training requirements to obtain UAB Radioactive Material Licensure at UAB. To obtain information for a UAB Radioactive Materials License, call the Radiation Safety Program at extension 934-4751 or 934-2487.
Radiation Safety Refresher Course Training
This online course is required once every 5 years for those who work with radioisotopes. For more information, click here, or call OH&S at 934-2487.

those individuals who have had some experience in basic radiation safety
principles, a challenge exam may be given in the RSP office. The RSP
address is Suite 445 Community Health Services Building. Call the Radiation
