Mercury Spill Cleanup Procedure

NOTE: The Department of Occupational Health and Safety is equipped with a mercury vacuum to effectively remove spilled mercury.

  1. RESTRICT the AREA – allow no one to enter the room except for urgent patient care or containment of the spill.
  2. Contact Chemical Safety at 4-2487
  3. Patients may need to be moved if possible to allow mercury to be cleaned from the area.

BROKEN THERMOMETERS- these can be safely collected in a container that can be sealed. When doing this make sure you wear disposable gloves and make sure all mercury and mercury contaminated waste is disposed of in a manner consistent with disposal of other chemical waste.

  • After cleaning up the spill wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Report all mercury spills to Chemical Safety at 4-2487
